GLACIER PARK CANADA: ROGER'S PASS BACKCOUNTRY SKIING:

Some of the best accessible backcountry skiing in North America can be found from Roger's Pass on Rte 1 in Canada's Glacier Park. With about half a dozen trailheads, the possibilities are huge and the terrain is even bigger. With sustained 4000-5000 foot runs this area has some of the biggest vertical and combined with its abundant annual snowfall and remote nature, it is a back country skiers paradise. There are a number of backcountry ski huts for rent in the park administered by Parks Canada and the Canadian Alpine Club as well as a comfy hotel run by Best Western right on the pass. But that is all, no village for an hour ( Golden or Revelstoke), just snow , terrain, trucks pounding the transcontinental highway and a few like minded souls. Resources abound in the region from the daily avalanche forecast from Parks Canada and their information station adjacent to the hotel, to guidebooks, and detailed maps all available on site. Suffice it to say that this is a premier destination for the purist. Pack your car and go for a week, you will surely find conditions to rival anything you have ever experienced. Park staff is helpful with a display book of ski runs, mandatory check out, and a warm interpretive station for those camping out in the Asulkan Creek parking lot. I have only made one trip here myself, and eagerly look forward to the next opportunity to go.
